Discovering Our DEEPTIME ORIGIN STORY Sixty Years Ago

In 1964, two radio astronomers, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson, working for Bell Labs, accidentally discovered the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR), evidence that the universe did indeed start as a fiery ball, smaller than a grain of sand, which exploded in a Big Bang, and continues to expand and unfold even today.  For this scientific breakthrough, Penzias and Wilson won the Nobel Prize in Physics. Humans had evidence, for the very first time, that the universe isn’t static; that the universe is a single integrated entity and it is constantly evolving.  It was a stunning breakthrough in human understanding of our origin and identity.  We come out of, and ARE, the universe.  We’re not IN a story.  We ARE the story.  For more info about this spectacular discovery, click here.

What is the Horn Antenna and Why Preserving it is so Important?

The Horn antenna is a 20 ft tall and 50 ft long, specialized antenna situated on Crawford Hill in Holmdel, New Jersey. Because of its scientific significance it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989. However, last year a developer announced plans to dismantle the antenna and build condominiums at the site. A huge effort by several grassroot citizen organizations—demonstrated in part by more than 8,000 signatures on a petition disseminated by community groups—resulted in Holmdel Township buying the land and the antenna. The town plans to turn the land into a public park with an education center.  To read more about the Horn Antenna, click here.

We’ll Meet in What was the Bell Labs Building

Our meeting will be in the Bell Works building in Holmdel, New Jersey (once Bell Labs) where the research behind the cosmic microwave background was conducted, and which has now been converted into an indoor community hub. To see a video about the building, click here.  Sarbmeet Kanwal* will lead us in a discussion on the science and the story behind this landmark discovery. Time will also be provided for contemplating what this connection with the light from our source means to each of us individually.  Lunch will be provided and there will also be time to meet with others and dialog about the future course for Deeptime Networks around the question: what is the next level that our community should aspire to.

Logistics

There’s a train station in Hazlet New Jersey, which is about 15 minutes from the Bell Works building, that can easily be reached from New York, Philadelphia, and Newark Airport.  We encourage people to join others for breakfast in the morning at Bell Market in the Bell Works building.

Schedule

8:30 – 9:30 Join others for breakfast at Bell Market in the Bell Works building (https://www.bellmarketnj.com/)
9:30  Head to Horn Antenna
10:00 Horn Antenna Ribbon cutting with Holmdel Mayor
12:00 Lunch at Bell Works
12:30 Presentation by Sarbmeet Kanwal and discussion with other Deeptime Leaders*
2:30  Closing

* Jennifer Morgan (president, Deeptime Network), Stephan Martin (director, Deeptime Leadership Program), and Orla Hazra and Brian Tucker (board members)

Please note:  Creating this program is an emergent process based on who comes!  All efforts are being made to gain permission from the Holmdel Township to have our group assemble at the site of the antenna. If permission is not granted, we will assemble at an open area as close to the antenna as possible.

Sarbmeet Kanwal, PhD is an award-winning educator and a pioneer in novel ways of teaching quantum physics and astronomy. He holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics from the California Institute of Technology. His aptitude for explaining intricate scientific concepts in everyday language, has made him a sought after speaker among both science and non-science communities. He is the author of a TEDx talk on our new cosmic story, titled “Chaos to Cosmos.”  He is a regular contributor to science blogs and a frequent instructor for Deeptime Network.

“We have a New Story of the Universe. Our own presence to the Universe depends on our human identity with the entire cosmic process.”
