Lawrence L. Edwards
A Life Story by Jean Edwards
|
So many of us were taught and mentored by Larry Edwards, particularly when he and his wife Jean (pictured above) taught at Genesis Farm in Blairstown, New Jersey from 1991 to 2008. Read his story of transformation from a mainstream Harvard trained scientist to design a live-in master’s degree Program, called Earth Literacy, based on the work of Thomas Berry. The live-in and seminar program had three components: The evolutionary scientific Story of the Universe, the context for all life; The Earth as Primary Teacher, the interdependence of the Web of all life; and living the implications in each of our individual Bioregions.
|
It was a landmark program that drew people from around the world and its participants went on to found centers and spread the work in many fields. DTN president Jennifer Morgan participated in the program in 1997 inspiring her to write a Universe Story Trilogy and to found the Deeptime Network.

Experts say wonder is an essential human emotion — and a salve for a turbulent mind. The Deeptime Network recognizes “awe” as a quintessential human experience that fosters bonding, innovation, and meaning.

Patterns Where Invisible Forces Become Visible
A few days ago I sketched a little branch by painting each leaf with my homemade Black Walnut ink, then pressing it onto the paper. Then, with a very fine dip pen, I added details to each leaf and added the branch. Instead of a drawing of a leaf, I wanted the essential leaf imprinted to invite the experience of being aware of its beauty.

Family Ritual: Celebrating Cataclysm and Gratitude
A number of my family members are experiencing cataclysmic loss: an unexpected loss of a beloved job, a sudden closing of a school, a cousin’s boyfriend committed suicide, and the death of dear ones, to name a few. We felt a need to create a ritual during our Thanksgiving gathering that would provide space to ritually give voice to tragedy and to contextualize it inside of Deeptime.

Standing on Holy Ground:
Thomas Berry’s Primary Revelation
Ever since I was introduced to Thomas Berry’s work in 2000, his thinking has informed and enriched my own beyond measure. For this essay, I chose one of my favorite of his ideas: that we expand our vision beyond our treasured texts to include Earth herself as our primary source of revelation. “We need to go to the earth, as the source from whence we came, and ask for its guidance, for the earth carries the psychic structure as well as the physical form of every living being upon the planet.” I spend a lot of time doing just that, so it was a perfect fit.

The Worldview of Thomas Berry: The Flourishing of the Earth Community
This FREE Coursera course taught by Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim is a foundational course for everything we're doing on the Network. If you aren't familiar with the work of Thomas Berry, this is a great way to get started, and even if you are familiar with his work, this course will take you deeper.

An art exhibition at the National Academy of Sciences offers perspective on our geological past and future
Earth is roughly 4.5 billion years old—a number that is hard for humans to grasp. “For someone whose life expectancy is usually less than 100 years, it’s nearly impossible to imagine something so vast as geological or deep time,” says J.D. Talasek, director of cultural programs at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.
