Last week, I met with Freeman Dyson, physicist at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (same Institute where Einstein worked) to talk about the Emergent Universe Oratorio, composed by DTJN member Sam Guarnaccia that we’re working to bring to Princeton. The day before I met with Freeman, I wrote to Brian Swimme to ask him if he had any questions for Freeman. (Freeman is quoted in the movie Journey of the Universe saying, “The Universe must have know we were coming.”) Brian was eager to hear his latest thoughts about “World Soul” a concept that his mother had talked to him about as a child. Among many other topics which I’ll discuss in future postings, Freeman’s direct quote on the subject is the following: “Mind is built into the universe in some fashion. It’s not something that humans invented. It’s more general. A World Soul could be a collection of different kinds of mind. We get glimpses into the World Mind through religious insights. Not in any way that I understand. Others understand, not me.” What an extraordinary conversation with this renowned physicist who expressed such deep respect for a “religious” way of knowing.

    • Wow, that is so exciting, Jennifer! How extraordinary to have such a meeting of the minds able to perceive and articulate the world scientifically & spiritually (or meta-scientifically) in complementarity. It’s an especially thought-provoking comment, especially as humans (not the universe) invented religion. May luck and work align to bring the Oratorio to Princeton!

      • Thanks Imogene! Yes and Yes! We’re having great fun aligning many different people around the Emergent Universe Oratorio and will organize other programs. It’s a huge project — choir, instrumentalists and much more. Paula Guanaccia, Sam’s wife, is an extraordinary “producer.” And re Freeman’s comments . . . what a privilege to hear his ideas. His father was a composer and so he feels a very strong affinity with music. Hope to meet with him again soon.

        • It sounds like a huge and most exciting project, Jennifer! Looking forward to it, and to hearing more of Freeman Dyson’s comments on the network!

    • Jennifer and Imogene!!
This all feels like riding the leading edge of gravity waves from a Supernova. Come to think of it……it IS!
And here, from Bernie Krause, is a fantastic exploration of our ‘musical’ way of knowing….the sounds of the ‘natural world’, from which we know thousands of times more than from our eyes. How wonderful that we have so many ways of experiencing and celebrating the beauty of our Universe home! http://www.ted.com/talks/bernie_krause_the_voice_of_the_natural_world
Deep thankfulness for this new galactic phenomenon, the ‘virtual’ landscape of inter-relatedness we are calling the DTJN.
      Love, Sam
