Dear Deep Timers,
The Network is nearing 200 members in eight countries. Members include educators, centers of many kinds (e.g. teacher training, environmental, spiritual), artists, filmmakers, musicians, composers, writers, environmentalists, religious, clergy, and many others. . . all exploring the implications of an evolving universe as the foundational context.
As the Network grows, forming groups will be a great way to reach out to others. Inside of groups, you can have private conversations, send each other resources, work on documents together, and when you want . . . share what you’re working on with others in the Network.
It’s easy to start a group. But first, here are the different types of groups you can start:
Public groups are listed in the groups directory, can be joined by any site member, and group content and activity will be visible to any site member.
Private groups are: 1) only accessible to users who request membership and are accepted into the group; and 2) listed in the groups directory and in search results. Public Group content and activity will only be visible to members of the group. Hidden groups are accessible by only the users who are invite to join the group.
Hidden groups are not listed in the groups directory or search results; and content and activity will only be visible to members of the group.Think about your specific area of interest and how it inside of a group. Groups exploring anything inside a deep time perspective are possible . . . here are just a few examples that come to mind:
– Montessori High School Teachers integrating Big History
– Thomas Berry Study Group
– Rights of Nature and an Evolving Universe
– Clergy Integrating Evolution into Sermons
– Centers with a Walk Through Time Exhibit
– Big History and MeaningIt can be anything inside a deep time perspective. Once you’ve decided on a name and a purpose for your group, then invite others you know on the Network to join by messaging them and making an announcement in the Activity Stream. You can also send me a message and I’ll send an email to the Network about it and will post it on the DTJN Facebook page. Invite others who aren’t on the Network to come on, become an approved Contributing Members, and join the group.
Once you’re a Contributing Member, the steps for starting a group are:
1. Log in
2. Hover over your name in the upper right hand corner of the screen
3. Hover over “Groups,”
4. Select “Create a Group.”
5. Answer the questions. As a member of DTJN, you have some amazing technology you can use to organize groups. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you want to brainstorm any ideas.
Sending all my best from Portland, US,
Jennifer
PS. Will give a keynote for Unitarian Universalists at their Spirit Play conference on August 1 on “The Sacred Universe: Igniting the Imagination of Every Child.” Then, it’s on to California for the Big History Conference, and hangin’ out with my son along the way in Palo Alto. Looking forward to it all!

Thank you Jennifer and Deep Time Journey Network for trawling in the wide net you have cast so we can all talk and learn from each other….Nearly 200….It feels like entering a DTJ library!
I watched the trailor for ‘Grandmother Fish” I love the book and the name of the book which is a ‘relation’….one of our relations in the web of life now and preceeded us a long long time ago.
I think many of us have thought a long time about the ‘Creationist’ cosmology, but i think that setting ourselves apart from ‘them’, Ie ‘Creationists have their own story, ………..we need the same thing for our children…..’ Creation stories have been created by Earth through human form in various bioregions ever since humans emerged in Africa. Each one, to a greater or lesser extent, offers an understanding of being an integral component with Earth as well as obligations to act as if we are integral with her. These take shape in other community stories and rituals of seasonal celebration.
Earth is now telling a more comprehensive story inclusive of all our deep time journey together. This story is one to show from where other creation stories emerged. Setting one story against the other, or one community against another does not help foster dialogue. As Thomas Berry advised…it is in the conversation of the wisdoms of science, religion, women and indigenous peoples that our new functional cosmology will emerge….we are still all , as Jennifer points out above, “exploring the implications of an evolving universe.” While ‘religion’ as currently understood is being correctly challenged by many, they also are historical avenues for addressing Mystery and hold parables which help to upset current cultural myths which are problematic (eg particular forms of development) and need to be challenged. This is the beauty of the conversation and our obligation to care for all our grannies around us…human and non human. congratulations! orla
