THE COSMIC SIGNAL
The Science and its Implications

Learn the Three Most Important Things to Know about the Horn Antenna Discovery!
This two-week course is a follow up to the community wide premier showing of THE COSMIC SIGNAL (9 minute video) that happened on May 8, attended by Nobel Laureate Robert Wilson. Participants had many questions about the significance of the discovery of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) that proved that the universe began as an exploding fireball.
Hear about the significance and drama around the discovery of proof that the universe actually began in an exploding fireball, giving us THE NEW STORY of an evolving universe.
The science will be presented in a very accessible way and there will be plenty of time for questions and reflections together.
Key Scientific Concepts:
1. What is the nature of the cosmic microwave background radiation? How does it relate to what we normally think of as light? Explain the electromagnetic wave spectrum and the concept of wavelength and frequency. Why does the horn antenna have the shape that it does? Why do we sometimes refer to CMBR as the sound of the universe?
2. What is the human story behind the discovery of CMBR? From Einstein’s theory to Hubble’s observations to Penzias and Wilson.
3. What is the process that caused CMBR to be released into the universe 380,000 years after the big bang? Why did it take that long for the first atoms of hydrogen to form and why are atoms transparent to the radiation, while particles are not.
4. How do we understand the stretching of CMBR from visible light to microwave radiation? What is the nature of the expansion of the universe and what is the best way to visualize it? (The raisin bread and balloon analogies)
5. What does the CMBR tell us about the omnicentric nature of cosmic evolution? How is the universe evolving now?
Key implications:
1. We belong to the universe and grew out of it as an apple grows from an apple tree.
2. Evolution is not just a random causal process that springs from the laws of physics – it is evoked by the whole of which we are a part. The universe bathes us with sources of evocation and waits for us to develop the sensitivities needed for us to be able to react and respond to those evocations.
3. Every natural entity is a center of evolution. The universe evolves through each center through its subjectivity along with the nurturance provided by the surroundings.

Sarbmeet Kanwal, PhD is an award-winning educator and a pioneer in novel ways of teaching quantum physics and astronomy. He holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics from the California Institute of Technology. In the last two years he has assisted with instruction for Deeptime Network courses.
Stephan Martin is an astronomer, educator, and author who has teaches astronomy, physics, and consciousness studies; and is director of the Deeptime Leadership & Wellbeing Program. He studied directly with Brian Swimme and others at the California Institute of Integral Studies, out of which came his first book Cosmic Conversations, in which he held dialogues with scientists, spiritual teachers, and cultural creatives on the nature of the universe and our role in it.
