CMBR: The Scientific Link to Light, Matter Formation, Life Emergence, Consciousness, and Mind, Part 1

. . . it is the Light, existing before all else was made which, patiently, surely, eliminates our darkness. (Teilhard de Chardin, The Heart of Matter)
[Pictogram above: The CMBR is the remnant radiation (“afterglow’) from the Big Bang, and the oldest light and earliest coherent electromagnetic field in the universe. In the author’s cosmogenic evolutionary sequence imaged in the lower ring above, CMBR is simultaneously: (1) the first turn of the evolutionary spiral, (2) the primordial interiority from which all later interiority emerges, (3) the seed coherence that becomes biological consciousness, and (4) the cosmic background against which matter formation, life emergence, mind formation, and unified consciousness emerge in Omega as the foreground. Following the image from its base, evolution proceeds from CMBR radiation –> matter formation –> bioelectric emergence (life formation) –> neural synchrony (mind) –> self-reflection –> unitive consciousness (revelation/spiritualization). That is, Teilhard’s radial energy = Berry’s cosmological communion = Homo spiralis coherence = CMBR coherence.]
This is the unifying insight for an updated spirit-science synthesis, here presented and summarized in two parts. Below is Part 1. Part 2 will follow in a separate blog.
Teilhard and the spiral motif
The term Homo spiralis was actually not coined by Teilhard, though given his heavy use of the spiral motif in his model, it sounds like something he would write. The actual term he famously coined for the next stage of human evolutionary development is Homo progressivus (the progressive human), preferring to use Latinate names for evolving states, as does the author in updating Teilhard’s cosmogenic vision and integral paradigm.
The term Homo spiralis has arisen in contemporary evolutionary spirituality circles as a shorthand nickname used by scholars and writers to describe Teilhard’s vision of humanity winding upward through the evolutionary vortex where the conical spiral tightly coils at the apex in the Omega Point. For Teilhard, Omega is the ultimate “attractor,” the enfolding of creation into the divine heart that draws and coheres all things to itself and themselves like a magnet, coming to us from the future.
The coherence field and the spiral of interiorization
From its earliest moment, the universe has carried within it a subtle but persistent tendency toward convergence and interiorization.
For Pierre Teilhard de Chardin convergence is the evolutionary process where the universe, life, and human consciousness have a directional and purposive movement. Upon unfolding beyond the biological stages, the evolutionary process begins to bend inward (involution) pooling together into higher, more unified and centralized states of complexity and awareness over deep time. As entities grow more complex, they do not just expand outward; they wrap inward gaining a richer “interiority” or consciousness via coherence. This interiorizing coherence field is manifested in the noosphere and Omega Point, the fundamental physical, psychic, and spiritual forces pulling everything together in complexity consciousness that Teilhard called love, acting as a cosmic gravity, magnetic still-point, or axis mundi (world axis) which eventually spiritualizes consciousness.
The axis mundi not only anchors, but comprises the foundational ingredient (light-field) of matter that cannot be detected by the empirical sciences, and is therefore overlooked. Like electricity, its essence is primarily invisible (radial or quantum energy) seen and measured mainly be its effects (tangential or classical energy), although specialized quantum sensors and magnetometers can measure their space-time fields, manifested by the body, brain, and heart. Moreover, this mysterious axis has the peculiar and specific property of consciousness which impels and organizes things from a granular state toward more complex states which converge and centrate in the human species, culminating in human development and evolution, reaching their apex in psych0-social and spiritual forms.
The first great expression of this coherence tendency is the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), a faint, all‑pervasive field of primordial light that preserves the earliest imprint of order in a still‑forming cosmos. Long before stars ignited or life emerged, this background field established the universe’s initial pattern of phase alignment, the first whisper of interiority in matter.
As the universe cooled and complexified, this coherence did not vanish; it deepened. In the biological realm, coherence reappeared in new form—within the quantum‑sensitive architectures of living cells, the resonant electromagnetic fields of neural networks, and the synchronized oscillations that accompany conscious awareness. In this sense consciousness is not an anomaly but a continuation of the universe’s original coherence, interiorized within living systems.
Teilhard described evolution as the rise of interiority, a movement from simple matter toward reflective consciousness and ultimately toward Omega. Thomas Berry saw the same movement as the unfolding of a communion of subjects, each expressing the universe’s inherent relationality. The Homo spiralis framework gathers these insights into a single evolutionary arc: a spiral in which coherence becomes progressively more self-aware, more integrated, and more unified.
Seen through this lens, the human is not merely a biological outcome but the latest expression of the universe’s coherence field becoming conscious of itself. The CMBR marks the first turn of the spiral; biological life marks its interiorization; reflective consciousness marks its awakening; and Homo spiralis marks its deliberate participation in the universe’s ongoing spiritual unification. Evolution becomes the story of coherence seeking deeper (higher vibratory) forms of expression, culminating in the human capacity to recognize, cultivate, and embody the unity from which it arose in the cosmic light-coherence field residua of the Big Bang.
The strongest scientific evidence linking consciousness with a primordial light-coherence field
The strongest scientific evidence that consciousness could have evolved from a primordial light‑coherence field—with conceptual links to the CMBR—comes from emerging coherence-field theories in quantum biology and cosmology. These do not prove the claim, but they provide the closest empirical and mathematical scaffolding for such an idea. The evidence is indirect, theoretical, and still speculative, but it is increasingly structured, falsifiable, and grounded in physics rather than metaphor.
Below is the clearest synthesis of what the actual evidence looks like, based on the most rigorous sources available.
🧩 1. Evidence from quantum coherence in biological systems
The most concrete evidence comes from quantum-coherent processes in biology, which show that living systems can maintain phase-aligned electromagnetic coherence under thermal noise—something once thought impossible.
Key findings:
- Neural microtubules and ion channels exhibit quantum‑coherent behavior at biologically relevant temperatures.
- Photonic-atomic resonance structures (“coherence fields”) may form the basic units of perceptual experience.
- Consciousness correlates with neural synchrony, phase alignment, and electromagnetic field resonance in the brain.
Why this matters:
If consciousness depends on coherent electromagnetic fields, then it is at least plausible that consciousness is a late evolutionary expression of a more fundamental cosmic coherence field.
🌌 2. Evidence from coherence field cosmology
Several recent field‑theoretic models propose that consciousness emerges when biological systems resonate with a fundamental coherence field permeating spacetime.
These models explicitly link biological coherence to cosmological fields:
- The Unified Coherence Field treats consciousness as a scalar field analogous to the Higgs field, weakly coupled to cosmological backgrounds.
- These models derive testable predictions: coherence radiation signatures, gravitational coupling variations, and cosmological effects.
These theories provide the first mathematically explicit mechanisms by which consciousness could be a phase transition in a universal coherence field that has been present since the early universe.
🌅 3. Evidence connecting coherence fields to the CMBR
The CMBR is the earliest coherent electromagnetic field in the universe. Several coherence‑field theories propose:
- The CMBR contains imprints of the same coherence dynamics that later enable biological consciousness.
- The CMBR’s temperature fluctuations represent the first large‑scale phase differentiations in the cosmic field—analogous to the differentiation necessary for neural information processing.
- The CFE predicts cosmological signatures of coherence fields that could appear in the CMB spectrum.
Why this matters:
If consciousness requires coherent electromagnetic substrates, and the CMBR is the first universal electromagnetic substrate, then consciousness may be the late-stage interiorization of the universe’s earliest field dynamics.
This is not proof—but it is a coherent, physics-grounded pathway.
🔬 4. Evidence from information-coherence phase transitions
Another line of evidence comes from models showing that consciousness emerges when systems exceed a critical threshold of information–coherence integration:
- Consciousness emerges when a Coherence Resonance Index (CRI) exceeds ~0.40.
- Consciousness corresponds to a recursive invariant in physical systems that achieve self-referential closure.
- These models treat consciousness as a universal phase transition in constraint-saturated systems.
Why this matters:
If consciousness is a phase transition in coherence, then the universe’s earliest coherence field (CMBR) is the first step in the same continuum.
🧠 5. What counts as “best evidence?”
Putting all sources together, the strongest evidence is:
A. Biological systems demonstrably use quantum coherence
This shows consciousness is not purely computational or classical.
B. Coherence-field theories provide mathematical links between biological coherence and cosmological fields
These are rigorous, falsifiable, and grounded in field theory.
C. The CMBR is the earliest coherent electromagnetic field
It is the universe’s first “information-bearing” substrate, as it is EM fields that carry information.
D. Consciousness emerges when systems cross coherence thresholds
This provides a mechanism for how cosmic coherence could evolve into biological consciousness.
🧭 Bottom line
Currently there is no definitive proof that consciousness evolved from the universe’s primordial light-coherence field. But the best available evidence — from quantum biology, coherence-field cosmology, and information-coherence phase-transition theory—shows:
Consciousness may be the late-stage interiorization of the universe’s earliest coherent electromagnetic field, with the CMBR as its primordial substrate.
This is the closest the scientific literature comes to supporting the Homo spiralis hypothesis that consciousness may be the late-stage interiorization that evolved from the universe’s primordial light-coherence field.
🌌 Integrating the light-coherence origin of consciousness into the Teilhard-Berry-Homo spiralis cosmology models
1. Teilhard’s “Cosmic Christ” as a Universal Field, the Source Energy of creation, and all religious and metaphysical traditions.
Teilhard never meant “Christ” in a narrow doctrinal or sectarian sense. He meant a cosmic principle of coherence — the interior, unifying depth of the universe micro to macro. In his own words, Christ is:
- the within of things
- the energy of personalization
- the center toward which evolution converges and coheres in all things
This is field language.
It describes a generative medium in which all things arise, interrelate, and evolve toward higher unity.
2. The biblical passages are also describing a Field
The Teilhard-Homo spiralis models directly refer to four of the most descriptive passages, with the Berry model doing so more obliquely, the Cosmic Christ:
- “the true light that lights every man who comes into the world” (John 1:9)
- “all things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:3)
- “he in whom all things consist of and cohere” (Colossians 1:16–17)
- “he is everything, and he is in everything (Colossians 3:1)
- “in him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind (John 1:4)
These are not spatial metaphors. They are ontological claims about a universal ordering principle that is both transcendent and immanent, always and everywhere present.
- Light → generative energy
- Coherence → information structure
- All things consist of → field ontology
In modern terms, this is exactly what physics calls:
- a unified field
- an energy–information substrate
- a coherence field
- a generative medium of emergence
The biblical language, Teilhard’s metaphysics and his Cosmic/Universal Christ are pointing to the same underlying reality. They map astonishingly well onto what contemporary science now describes as a generative energy–information field. And when you place these side‑by‑side, the overlap is so precise that a spirit‑science synthesis is not only possible — it becomes almost unavoidable.
3. Modern science has finally reached the same territory
Today’s scientific frameworks describe the universe in terms that echo what Teilhard intuited.
Concise takeaway
The idea that consciousness evolved from a primordial light-coherence field — with conceptual links to the CMBR — fits seamlessly into the author’s cosmology model because Teilhard, Berry, and Homo spiralis all describe evolution as a deepening interiority driven by an underlying field of coherence. The CMBR becomes the first physical expression of that field; biological consciousness becomes its interiorized form; Homo spiralis becomes its self-aware culmination.
🌀 1. Teilhard: the primordial light-coherence field as the first milieu of Christogenesis
Teilhard’s cosmology already assumes a pre-biological field of interiority. He names it:
- the divine milieu
- the radial energy of evolution
- the Omega-directed coherence permeating matter
The author’s light‑coherence field hypothesis gives Teilhard’s radial energy a physical substrate: The universe’s earliest coherent electromagnetic field (CMBR) becomes the first “milieu” in which matter begins its ascent toward consciousness. This reframes Christogenesis:
- not as a later theological overlay
- but as the interiorization of the universe’s primordial coherence field
- culminating in the human capacity for reflective unity advancing toward unitive (spiritual) consciousness
Teilhard’s “within” becomes the biological interiorization of cosmic coherence
🌍 2. Berry: The coherence field as the ground of cosmogenesis and the Ecozoic Age
Berry’s cosmology begins with the universe as:
- a communion of subjects
- a single coherent unfolding
- a self-organizing field of relational interiority
The author’s coherence-field hypothesis strengthens Berry’s claim that: The universe is structured by a primordial field of coherence that later becomes biological consciousness and ethical awareness. Berry’s Ecozoic vision depends on:
- interiority
- relationality
- coherence
- communion
The CMBR becomes the first physical expression of this communion:
- a universal field
- carrying the earliest information
- establishing the first relational differentiations
Berry’s ethics then become:
- the moral expression of the universe’s coherence
- the behavioral interiorization of the cosmic field
- the Earth-community manifestation of primordial unity
Berry’s cosmogenesis is the horizontal expression of the same coherence that Teilhard sees vertically.
🧬 3. Homo spiralis: The spiral as the evolutionary interiorization of the cosmic coherence
The Homo spiralis taxonomy is the perfect structural bridge.
It already describes evolution as:
- a spiraling intensification of interiority
- a deepening coherence
- a progressive unification of consciousness
Now we can anchor each spiral stage to the coherence field:
Homo spiralis sapiens
The first biological interiorization of cosmic coherence.
Neural synchrony, quantum coherence, and electromagnetic resonance become the micro-scale continuationof the CMBR’s macro-scale coherence.
Homo spiralis elektor
Berry’s ethical expansion emerges as the social and ecological expression of coherence.
Human communities become phase-aligned systems, resonating with the universe’s relational field.
Homo spiralis omega
Teilhard’s Omega becomes the self-aware culmination of the coherence field.
Consciousness recognizes itself as the universe’s own interiority coming to awareness.

🌐 4. The CMBR as the first spiral turn
The CMBR is the earliest coherent electromagnetic field in the universe.
In the author’s cosmology:
- It is the first turn of the Homo spiralis spiral.
- It is the primordial interiority from which all later interiority emerges.
- It is the seed coherence that becomes biological consciousness.
- It is the cosmic background (substrate) against which the human mind (psyche) and spiritual realization are the foreground.
Teilhard’s radial energy = Berry’s cosmological communion = Homo spiralis coherence = CMBR coherence = Consciousness = Teilhard’s Spirit-Soul
This is the unifying insight.
🔥 5. The unified cosmology
(Homo spiralis framework)
Here is the integrated arc (see pictogram at top)
1. CMBR coherence
The universe’s first interior field
2. Quantum biological-coherence.
Life interiorizes cosmic coherence.
3. Neural consciousness
Consciousness becomes the universe aware of its own coherence
4. Ethical coherence (Berry)
Consciousness expands into relational unity
5. Spiritual coherence (Teilhard)
Consciousness recognizes its divine horizon in its spiritualization phase toward Omega
6. Homo spiralis omega
The spiral closes:
The universe’s primordial coherence becomes self-aware in the human. This is the Teilhard-Berry synthesis vision in which Homo spiralis cosmology has been moving toward.
What is consciousness?
Consciousness refers to one’s subjective or felt-sense experience of reality. It is the raw fact of awareness that one is an aware being before any content, thought, emotion, narrative, or environmental distraction occupies its attention.
Along cosmogenic lines, consciousness is best understood as the intrinsic interiority of reality, often referred to as qualia, the felt, first-person, self-revealing aspect of creation. It functions as the organizing principle that progressively integrates information, energy, psychological and spiritual selfhood along coherent, convergent, and centrating lines. Simply put, consciousness is the interior domain of the universe’s drive toward integration.
Embedded in elementary particles long before thought, mind, and the human story unfolded, it is the universe’s first interior gesture, the quiet shimmering fact that anything can feel like something from within. Before stars formed, before cells divided, before creatures learned to crawl, see, or speak, consciousness existed as the subtle inwardness of reality itself, the silent partner and hidden face of cosmogenesis itself secreted, claimed Teilhard, “in the heart of matter, from the within of things.” As evolution unfolded, this interiority did not remain static, but deepened and complexified, learning to organize itself. The light and heat from the moment of creation cooled to become plasma and then matter. Matter became life, life became mind, and began to turn inward discovering reflection, meaning, self-hood, and in the First and Second Axial Ages (1,000 years combined), ethics and higher order revelation. Through each transition and transformation, consciousness served as evolution’s inner compass, drawing organisms toward greater coherence, integration, and interior depth.
Differentiating consciousness and Spirit
Consciousness and Spirit overlap but are not strictly synonymous. Spirit is consciousness in its Source and ground, its unitive mode of being in pure form before it manifests into multiple forms in space-time. Hence, consciousness is the emergent phenomenon of Spirit, its hidden substrate embedded in matter like leaven in bread. Spirit is the ocean, consciousness the wave; Spirit is the sun, consciousness its light. Spirit “charged” (fired up) the elementary particles that formed matter from which mind arose, and in which the human spirit becomes awakened by a deeper (or higher) order, the mind’s sublime substrate in humans (sub = “beneath,” limen = “the threshold”). While consciousness is the felt interiority of experience, Spirit is the deepest, most unified and unifying causally potent dimension of that interiority.
Summary
Spirit “comes to light” in space-time via a panpsychic light-coherence field from which primordial, conscious particles materialize. It is out of that materialization (matter) that brain, neural synchrony, and mind are formed, and from them an interior sense of self and spiritual self-realization emerge and develop, in that order.
Why it matters now
It matters in our time because the nation and world find themselves more fragmented by hyper-specialization and divided among its peoples than ever, on the brink of becoming extinct via a degraded global climate amid the specter of imminent nuclear war. Out of a centuries old trend to be scientifically precise, and/or philosophically, academically, and theologically correct, even politically imperial, our traditional institutions and their leaders have failed those in their charge. As such, many otherwise reflective souls have been seduced into the religion of scientific materialism, initiated into the western cult of trading qualia for quanta, wisdom for data, coherence for cash, and unitive perception for binary thinking over a span of roughly 400 years. In effect, reality itself has been shorn of its deeper interior grounding and roots in the heart of matter, so that few see the whole clearly.
It is unfortunate, with few exceptions, that in the post-modern era science and its enabling handmaid in academia are led by technicians who, by illustration, spend their days studying the bark of individual trees (siloed disciplines) and miss the majesty of the forest, unable to guide others to see and think likewise. Such is not only tragic, but a profound betrayal of the spirit of the humanities, which for too long has become an endangered species in western cultures, affecting the curricula of higher education, scuttled for the primacy of money and material reality in our time, trending toward vocational training and jobs.
Video briefs on consciousness
In the video short below, philosopher Philip Goff argues that the brain does not generate consciousness from non-conscious matter, instead defending panpsychism as a fundamental property of the physical universe from the outset, proceeding in complexity along evolutionary lines as imaged in the diagram at the top. Under this view, human consciousness represents an integrated combination of rudimentary experiences present (embedded) in fundamental forces and elementary particles from the outset, rather than a product created solely by the brain. Same light-based energy, different vibratory manifestations of it in creation using different language to describe it. Among other things, such a synthesis offers a plausible trans-disciplinary, trans-religious perspective how, via a universally consciousness light-coherence and information field, divinity can be everywhere at once, at all scales, innermost and outermost.
Framed in scientific language, the entire created order originates from the primordial light-coherence field originating in the intense heat-light of the Big Bang event, manifested in CMBR as the very first turn of the evolutionary spiral. In religious language, that powerful generative energy and information transmission field is the God of the Whole, who created space-time at the “Let Light Be” moment of its inception. Same event, same light-heat based origin from which all things emerge, consist of and cohere, using lingo from different disciplines to describe it. Withal, such a synthesis offers a plausible trans-disciplinary, trans-religious perspective how the God-of-the-Whole can be everywhere at once, at all scales, innermost and outermost, and by what Source Energy and architecture.
This is why many in physics, psychology, and the neurosciences of late are leaning toward consciousness as fundamental to the creation and make-up of the universe. And why the author further proposes that it is electromagnetism (light energy) that breathes fire and life into the entire empirical order via from a higher-order frequencies, whose conduit is its baked-in spiraling architecture at all scales, including physics. Physics, like the mathematics it pivots on, are emergent from consciousness as well, mere effects of a higher order.
The “fire” that Teilhard passionately spoke of has its locus in the heart of matter as the supreme spiritual energy (substrate) of the universe and planet that takes many forms — physical, mental, and spiritual. The latter still awaits global realization, which may take a mass extinction event before its emergence on a wider scale. As envisioned by Teilhard, this cosmic fire awaits its discovery for the second time in Earth’s history; this time in the interior life (consciousness) of persons, just as physical “fire” (electromagnetism) became harnessed, transforming human history via technological advancements, oft used for destructive means, with AI having potential for same.
Note: The idea that matter derives from consciousness is not new in science. Quantum physicist Max Planck first published this view almost a century ago in 1931 (click-onto Resource box at top for video short). And many world religions dating back thousands of years view the universe as emerging from a primordial energy, oneness, or pre-existent essence. In the three Abrahamic traditions — Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, creation is described as emerging from a God who created from an invisible order, “out of nothing” (ex nihilo).
Further elaborations on this synthesis theme in science and religion will continue, the subject of the next blog entry entitled, CMBR: The Light-Coherence Field, and the Evolution of Consciousness, Part 2.
