Traditionally, Lent has been associated with the call to personal conversion, focussed on the ultimate goal of personal salvation. The new cosmic and ecological awareness of our time informs us that that our personal identity is deeply interwoven with creation. As Earthlings, we can’t save ourselves unless we are simultaneously working for the healing and restoration of God’s creation. Amid the current pandemic, we also know that our own reckless interference in the natural world contributes to the spread of such viruses. For this year, more than any other, we need an Ash Wednesday ritual to challenge and inspire us to become more responsible and creative Earthlings. Our time together will include an Ash Wednesday ritual.
