Imagine having a tour of the night sky by an experienced stargazer from the comfort of your own favorite viewing location! All you need is an internet or mobile-phone connection and a good view of the night sky to enjoy these live stargazing events hosted by Stephan Martin, professional astronomer, educator, and lifelong stargazer.
During these live events, Steve will point out some of the major stars and constellations of spring, share stories and myths about the night sky, and discuss some of the astronomical insights of what’s up there right now.
How does it work?
After registering you will receive a starmap and a link to Zoom, a free videoconferencing software that you can run from your phone, tablet, or other internet device. No software installation is needed, just click on the url provided in your browser and you’ll be connected to our gathering! We’ll be using the audio part of the conferencing only, since we’ll be looking at the sky together.
So that we can all be sure we’re looking at the same part of the sky, I recommend installing an astronomy app that will help you identify stars and constellations using your phone or mobile device. Some free ones I recommend are Star Chart, Sky View, or Night Sky Lite, all of which are available for free on IOS and Android devices. There are many other great apps and programs not listed here, so please use whichever one you’re most comfortable with.
Since this is an experiment and an emerging technology, I’m offering these sessions on a donation basis ($5-15 requested) so if you have a good experience with it, please consider making a donation. I’ll send a donation link after the successful events.
My goal is to provide a safe, shared, educational and entertaining experience that helps connect people to the natural world and a larger perspective during a challenging time.
What do I need in order to participate?
You’ll need a mobile device (phone, tablet, or other device) that can run one of the free stargazing apps listed above and an internet or cell-phone connection to listen to the broadcast via Zoom. Note that the Zoom link you will receive will have a call-in phone number so you can participate if you have cell-phone service and no internet connection. It’s best to download any astronomy apps or software ahead of time and then try them out to see if you can identify a few things in the night sky on your own before you join the stargazing event.
