Essential Teachings of Creation Spirituality
Matthew Fox’s life work has been to uncover essential teachings of the creation spirituality tradition, a tradition often trampled on, condemned and almost forgotten due to agendas of empire-building in the name of religion. Yet these teachings, long ignored, have contributed to the New Cosmology movement today and can awaken the very consciousness we need for creating a flourishing future for our planet.

Explore a Rich Tradition . . .
In our evening together, Matthew Fox will share how Creation Spirituality, part of the Western Tradition aligns with indigenous spirituality and the teachings of the Western mystics. We’ll explore the elements of this rich tradition such as Original Blessing, Panentheism, Realized Eschatology, the Cosmic Christ, and the importance of dialoging with science.
“The most excellent thing in the universe is not the human; the most excellent thing in the universe is the universe itself.” — Thomas Aquinas
Celebrate Matt’s New Book
To be released March 23rd!
Quotes from the back of the book:
“For me in today’s world, the wise and eloquent presence of Matthew Fox is ever again a source of wonder and gratitude.”—Joanna Macy, author, World as Lover, World as Self
“The critical insights, the creative connections, the centrality of Matthew Fox’s writings and teaching are second to none for the radical renewal of Christianity. You miss him and you miss the trajectory of the reform of Christianity and our return to the real sources.”—Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M. Center for Action and Contemplation, Albuquerque, NM
“Matthew Fox’s work holds an enormous importance in elaborating and sharing a spirituality adequate to our time. He also does not fail to criticize the type of society in which we live, in which there is no place for spirituality. And this is urgent if we want to save life on our planet.”—Leonardo Boff, author, Thoughts and Dreams of an Old Theologian
Explore the Mystics as Cosmological Heroes . . .
Matthew Fox will share inspiring stories about mystic-prophets such as Hildegard of Bingen, Thomas Aquinas, Meister Eckhart, Julian of Norwich, who shared a new cosmological vision based on their deep insights. Hildegard taught that the Creator of “all things” was a woman named Love. And that “it is God whom humans know in every creature.” And that “all things are penetrated with connectedness.” And that the Earth is “Mother of all that is human, mother of all that is natural” and that “the Earth must not be injured, the Earth must not be destroyed.”
Two of Matthew Fox’s 41 Books include:
Illuminations of Hildegard of Bingen
Julian of Norwich: Wisdom in a Time of Pandemic–and Beyond
Explore the Roots of the New Cosmology . . .
Science is a central contributor to the New Cosmology.* Other important contributors are Indigenous and the Western Creation Spirituality traditions. Meister Eckhart taught that “every creature is a word of God and a book about God.” Julian of Norwich lived through the worst pandemic ever in Europe, the bubonic plague that killed between 40 and 50 % of people. Yet she stayed deeply grounded in a creation spirituality.

“God is delighted to be our Father; and God is delighted to be our Mother. ”
“Faith is the trust that all things are in God and God is in all things.” (Pure panentheism)
— Julian of Norwich
About Matthew Fox . . .
Matthew Fox holds his doctorate in the history and theology of spiritualities from the Institut Catholique de Paris. He is author of 38 books on culture and spirituality that have been translated into 76 languages. He invented new pedagogies to teach spirituality since education that is strictly rational and left-brained is unable to teach spirituality which is about developing the mystical, intuitive or right brain and heart with body as well as the rational brain. When his work defending women’s rights and gay rights, earth rights and indigenous rights, fell afoul of Vatican orthodox hunters, he was silenced for a year and three years later expelled from the Dominican Order to which he had belonged for 34 years.
He then joined the Episcopal Church to work with young people to create the Cosmic Mass, a post-modern form of liturgy that incorporates the body and rave elements of dj, vj, rap and dance into the worship of the West. Over 100 such Masses have been celebrated in North America including masses at the last three World Parliament gatherings. He also founded, with two young adults, the Order of the Sacred Earth.
* Brian Swimme was on Matthew Fox’s faculty in both Chicago and Oakland, California and together they met Thomas Berry for the first time. Both Brian Swimme and Matthew Fox worked with Thomas Berry over the years.
Among his books are Original Blessing, The Coming of the Cosmic Christ, The Reinvention of Work, Order of the Sacred Earth, The A.W.E. Project: Reinventing Education, and Reinventing the Human. He has written three books on Hildegard of Bingen, three books on Meister Eckhart, and two on Thomas Aquinas. He and his books have received numerous awards including the Abbey Courage of Conscience Award and the King-Ikeda Peace Award and the International Sufi Award. Other recipients of the Abbey Award include the Dalai Lama, Mother Teresa, and Rosa Parks. He is a visiting scholar at the Academy of the Love of Learning.
