Thank you, Steve for all that you have written. I hadn’t thought of the stream continuing to flow as part of the image that is not shown in the painting. I have to think about how that might be painted, I think the water would be clearer so you could see more deeply into the stream and there would be some calm pools. Yes, opening the door to the…[Read more]

Hi Sheila, I have to find the place in the website where you sent your email. I’m not good at finding my way around the website. All three topics you name are very interesting. Many thanks for your response. Mary

Thank you Gretchen for your thoughtful words. I did need to do the work although some of it became conscious, not by my effort,

Thank you for this valuable essay. The wisdom traditions you describe are very helpful as we try to articulate the wisdom in the story of the evolutionary universe and the associated discoveries of science in the recent couple of centuries.. A “New Story Group” that I belong to has read Cynthia Bourgeault’s book The Wisdom Way of Knowing and found…[Read more]

Thank you for this lovely account of your relationship with Thomas Berry and you observations about him. I feel that I have a better understanding of who Thomas was.

Many thanks to Sam Guarnaccia for pointing me to the book where I could find the Thomas Berry quotation I have been looking for. It is in Befriending the Earth, p. 43. The version in this book is: “In my view, the human community and the natural world will go into the future as a single sacred community or we will both perish in the desert.”

I need go know where in Thomas Berry’s writing I can find his words: “We will go into the future as a single, sacred society or perish on the way.:” I need a citation for these words.
-
Seems crazy that we don’t know the citation for this quote which is used everywhere. Does anyone know the citation??
-
Mary, I think it’s community rather than society.

I copied the whole paragraph from which the quote comes from. You can find the exact quote at the middle of the paragraph.
It comes from Thomas Berry in his dialogue with Thomas Clarke in 1990, from which the book Befriending the Earth emerged:
“The earth is a very special sacred community. Humans become sacred by participating in this larger s…[Read more]-

Hello Stephen Martin: Jennifer Morgan pointed out your membership in the Deep Time Journey Network. We seem to have a somewhat similar story since I caught onto the New Story in the early 1990’s through Brian Swimme’s Canticle to the Cosmos. I thought you would be interested to know that there is an ongoing New Story Group at Friends Meeting at…[Read more]

Thank you Terri for this ritual. I like the connections you are making. It occurred to me as I read through it that you might consider the significance of the recognition by physicists that the “fire” of the sun is a thermonuclear fusion reaction. It is quite different from the fire we know. This enerygy from the sun connects us to very…[Read more]

Thank you Lawrence Edwards for starting this forum. I too was profoundly influenced by Canticle to the Cosmos. Your idea of finding a common vocabulary is important so the community of people involved with the evolutionary epic, no matter by what pathway a person has joined it, can reflect together to develop the earth wisdom that you suggest is…[Read more]

I want to recommend a talk “Harnessing the Power of Three: The Trinity as Skillful Means” given by Cynthia Bourgeault last Saturday at the Earlham School of Religion. It is not immediatly obvious that this belongs on a website about the universe story but the talk concerns a dynmaic principle in the innermost marrow of creation, connecting…[Read more]
