The first casualty in war is truth — Aeschylus
How to make evolutionary sense of war in cosmogenesis — past, present, and future
Teilhard’s experience in war, especially WWI, where he served as stretcher bearer, profoundly shaped his evolutionary theology. He didn’t glorify war but saw it as a paradoxical crucible: a place where chaos, suffering, and disintegration could catalyze spiritual and evolutionary deepening. Spirituality and spiritual consciousness are all about seeing and reconciling paradoxes. The collision of opposites, illustrated in the phi double-spiral, are spin-spiraling arcs that serially create and renew by moving in opposite directions. Similar counter-rotating energy fields are found in other science-mystery phenomena worldwide and is explained as the nexus between the visible and invisible, inner and outer worlds in Part 3 of this series. Heat and friction are common cosmic precursors to transformation and change in both the physical (outer) and metaphysical (inner) worlds.
War as evolutionary pressure (a paradox of destruction/unity, and entropy/renewal)
Specifically, Teilhard viewed war as a manifestation of fragmentation, tribalism, ego, and fear. He also saw it as a test of the interior life, where individuals either confront or avoid the existential realities of death, conflict, aggression, and self-destructiveness, along with meaning and transcendence. And Teilhard saw war as a collective crucible forcing humanity to face its incoherence and seek higher integration. He wrote, “The world is in a state of violent gestation,” whose byproduct in suffering, which properly processed results in spiritual energy and painful evolution toward a more united world. This view was Teilhard’s own version of war as he understood it historically and experienced it personally serving on the front lines. Aware or coincidental, this view was consonant with his wisdom tradition whose ancient scrolls refer to the created order as “groaning and travailing,” likened to “birth pangs” or labor pains, describing the entire natural world suffering under the effects of its bondage to decay (entropy), eagerly anticipating a future liberation in an evolved world. Again, entropy and renewal being the paradox (apparent contraries), two sides of the same coin so characteristic of evolutionary dynamics in both personal growth, spiritual mystery, and collective history over deep time.
Teilhard considered spirituality as prinmarily about seeing. Yet as important as spiritual sight and discernment are to enlightened minds, it follows that seeing the prevalence of cosmic contraries (paradoxes) like darkness and light, is also requisite to understanding and reconciling them. Chief among cosmogenic mysteries is that whole making at all levels tends to occur most radically on the heels of crises, where chaos, conflict, tragedy, and violence catalyze transformational change. Meaning, in personal and collective ordeals that are harrowing, traumatizing, and nightmarish, the experience of same is tantamount to being dragged through a knothole, the byproducts of which make for radical change.
For Teilhard, war was not the end, but a painful contraction in the birth of the noosphere, in alignment with the “birth pangs” analogy referenced by his religious tradition in the teachings of the Cosmic Christ. Teilhard’s war experience showed him that suffering can deepen awareness, not for its own sake, but only if it’s metabolized into meaning. Despite the horrors of war, his view was that evolution is irreversible, consciousness is rising, and the Omega Point continues drawing all things forward, even in the midst of dis-integration and chaos. War, then, is the shadow or entropy side of the phi-spiral (double-spiral) in Homo spiralis, not to be romanticized, but requisite to the upward movement of renewal on the upward-facing evolutionary arc, in its potential spiritualized in inverse proportion to the degree of its downward or disintegrating forces represented in the friction created by its opposite, the descending arc of the double-spiral (entropy coil). The paradox is depicted in the peculiar dance between opposites at all scales of the universe. Such instances infer that one can only deeply appreciate life by knowing death, or truly know peace by knowing war. Not as a prescription for wholesome living, but an inescapable principle of life in growth, change, and transformation at all levels when properly digested, metabolized, and integrated.
Teilhard’s war perspective summed up
Teilhard saw war as a tragic but catalytic force in evolution, revealing humanity’s fragmentation, but also its capacity for transcendence. Homo spiralis interprets war as chaotic torque, a pressure that either destroys or evolves. His hope was that even in blood and fire, the light of Omega could and usually does emerge.
Before continuing to develop Teilhard’s views on war in the context of his cosmogenic model and current events, along with its cosmogenic relevance to the Homo spiralis model, a quick review of that aspect of the phi-spiral (double-spiral) dynamic that defines the evolving christogenic and associated noogenic stages of evolution (the spiritualization of consciousness) as defined in Part 5.
Review of Part 5, The Spiritualization of Consciousness (a global spirit-science process)
In both personal and collective (global) evolution, the psychogenic/noogenic stages of Cosmogenesis evolve toward Christogenesis and Omega. Across religious traditions, this phase involves breakthroughs in the spiritualization of consciousness, the discovery of the spiritual self and identity, and the inherent oneness of all things embedded in cosmic generative energy and information fields that overlap. Such describes the enlightenment process of the God-of-the-Whole toward Omega, the final point of unification toward which evolution is drawn.
Subsequently, spiritual light results in spiritual sight, the awareness of Spirit as the invisible substance of all visible form universally. It’s how the outer form of things can be seen as created images in a holographic universe emerging from the “heart of matter” that become the user interface, the outer garments or jacketing of creation, a masquerade (persona) for the spiritual base of things boiling forth from their “within-ness.” Pared of their exterior appearances, what remains is their essence, the only Reality that prevails. One cannot discern the deeper layers of the created order without the aid of this higher-order unitive consciousness, lest one confuse the scaffolding (outer appearance) of creation for the building itself (its inner essence). It is the shell of the outer complexion of things cracks open in crises and disintegration (dissolves) to reveal the meaty content of their interior, maintaing their energy while losing their form. This transformation process evolves from status quo order –> to disorder –> to reorder, as anyone having successfully navigated a personal crisis can attest. There is no direct flight from the status quo (old order) to reorder without passing through disorder.
Such high states of consciousness are attained step-by-step in personal and cosmogenic evolution. First comes the recognition that although we’re human beings, there is a spiritual substrate or spark of energy (light) within with potential to fan into a flame. Then comes practicing the presence of that original state via regular devotional exercises that activate, inhabit, renew, and commune with that awareness until the point at which most of human selfhood begins to peel off. This process results in transcending states of humanhood, or early-stages of spiritual selfhood, a transformational process similar to metamorphosis, seen in nature when caterpillars morph to butterflies. To dwell in this realization is a form of prayer, acknowledging that at base there is only one Power manifesting in various forms, energy vibrating at various frequencies — physical, mental, and spiritual — lowest to highest in ascending/descending order on a spiraling stairway of enlightenement. And with that comes the awarness that appearances, circumstances, and events, however frightening or vexing, are ultimately not power, but reveal the depths of that power that lie just beyond states of despair. Activated, this higher consciousness is unlimited and imparts its wisdom to the spirit-soul from its infinite storehouse in the eternal, where the ceaseless activity of the outer world does not intrude.
Acessing same with regularity involves a degree of technical skill in mind and muscle, like practicing the musical scales, wherein repetition creates higher levels of proficiency over time. By practicing and abiding in this breakthrough awareness, the spirit-soul not only becomes familiar with its renewing context in a higher-order, but befriends it, and reaches a place of such deep union/communion, that one’s sense of humanhood disappears (collapses) completely, now permeable to a previously hidden reality. Having found its way home, the awakened spirit-soul enables seekers and sojourners to look out on the space-time world as incorporeal (spiritual) entities, in the world but not of it, open to spiritual impartations, healing energies, creative inspirations, and demonstrations following immersed in a God-of-the-Whole milieu.
At that point the spirit-soul is aware of itself as bi-stable, with a foot in two worlds, a spiritual being having a human experience, integrating and reconciling each domain to the other. From the outset they were never separated but only appeared that way to the dualistic (unenlightened) mind of separation consciousness. Here the terrestrial human encounters its opposite in the celestial divine, each reconciling with its opposite to form a new telestial being. This integration processs renders humans as dualistic in orientation, but with an awareness of being inseparable from their Source in uncreated universal light (see Part 5 in this series). The root of the word universe means to “turn around on one thing,” and light energy = spirit = consciousness is that one thing.
Since light energy carries information, that awareness finds spiritual consciousness translating (interpreting to the mind) the entire physical and mental dimensions of the created order as existing on a spectrum of vibrating electromagnetic frequencies streaming from higher to lower oscillations, emanating from an invisible (uncreated light) stratum –> mental/spiritual stratum, –> a materially visible stratum on a continuum. This streaming can be likened to a cascading waterfall whose Source lies somewhere “upstream,” out of sight. At times the experience of same can be rapturous, where the spirit-soul recognizes itself as both subject and object, observer and observed, the universe beholding itself and its essence as something fluidly numinous. Such is like watching Earth and all things in it, including the body, not only as a visible expression of the eternal, but as the visible “melting” or “liquefying” if itself, flowing to-and-fro from fluid to solid and back again in a cosmic energy field like alternating current (AC) (see Part 8).
This energy is tethered to Source (radial energy), expressing Itself in increasing degrees of visibility and density (tangential energy), embodied in space-time as mind/emotions while also appearing in its densest form as matter (body). This dynamic flow streams continually to and from Source, as particles pop in and out of their wave functions in physics, or swarming bees appear and reappear from a tiny vortex in their spiraling hive.
The experience of same is difficult for someone to comprehend who remains in a state of separation consciousness (binary thinking), perceiving divine Presence as separate from themselves. As in any stage of cognitive or emotional development, including the spiritual, one cannot understand a level of consciousness more evolved than their own, merely by using the consciousness they already have. Such states of awareness can only be glimpsed at in others but only understood by first-hand experiences of same in spiritual breakthroughs.
Back to Teilhard’s view of chaos and war
What has all this to do with chaos, conflict, and war? Plenty, as it relates to times of chaos, conflict, and upheaval in the story of individual lives, nations, and a travailing world in a continual process of transition toward higher states of being, seeing, renewing, and unitive consciousness. Again, Teilhard didn’t treat chaos as evil or meaningless, but in evolutionary terms. Such times of disorder were seen as the raw matrix from which new levels of complexity arise, charged with energy and potential, an evolutionary crucible where ever higher levels of synthesis and coherence are forged in friction. In his cosmogenesis, chaos is the tension field between opposites in paradoxes: the opposites of disintegration and integration, entropy and emergence, fragmentation and coherence — part of the entropy process (union of contraries) that creates next level life, not a failure of it. A decrease in one creates an increase in the other, and conversely in a cosmic dance of bi-stability (see part 5)
Homo spiralis: chaos as spiritual torque
In Homo spiralis, chaos is the torque (catalyst) that turns the spiral. Each stage of Homo spiralis involves a polarity (matter-mind, celestial-terrestrial, self-other, or order-chaos). Chaos is the disruptive polarity that creates friction, tension, forces recursion, reflection, energy transformations, and reorganization within and between the spiraling stages. Without chaos, the spiral would stagnate. Chaos is the pressure gradient that drives evolution. Teilhard’s chaos and the phi spiral (double arc spiral) schema align perfectly.
Chaos in today’s world; Mideast war as evolutionary pressure
The Middle East war and other global crises are not just geopolitical events, they are:
~ manifestations of unresolved polarity
~ symptoms of coherence thresholds not yet crossed
~ evolutionary pressure zones
Teilhard would interpret them as “noospheric contractions,” spiritually expressed as “birth pangs,” painful but necessary for the birth of planetary consciousness in its evolving noogenic mind. Homo spiralis sees them as Stage 4-5 turbulence. Here, symbolic recursion is active, but coherence is partial, where chaos erupts when integration fails.
In Teilhard’s religious tradition this has a biblical resonance in the chaos before creation. The Book of Genesis begins with, the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep. This is chaos, not as evil, but as pre-creation as confirmed by Big Bang cosmology.
Then comes, Let there be light (Let light be), uncreated light (radial energy) appearing in space-time as plasma and cooled as matter (tangential energy) emitting a “cosmic halo” of CMBR. Teilhard’s Omega is the final, transfigured light. The Homo spiralis Omega is the light of coherence, and both emerge from chaos as womb. The biblical, Teilhardian, and Homo spiralis models all agree that chaos is not the enemy, it’s the matrix/cauldron of transformation from which an evolved remnant emerges — through chaos, not around it.
Choas as evolutionary tension, spiral torque, and transforming pressure points
~ Teilhard saw chaos as evolutionary tension, not failure.
~ Homo spiralis treats chaos as spiral torque, essential for recursion.
~ global crises are pressure points in the spiral’s unfolding
~ in Teilhard’s religious tradition, the arc begins and ends with chaos transformed by light
~ the advancing remnant (noosphere) is not spared from chaos, it is refined by it
The diagram inserted in a later section below on the counter-rotational movement of opposites (in spiral arcs), shows how Teilhard’s concept of chaos functions as the engine of transformation within the Homo spiralis spiral of evolution.
In light of the Mideast War, how far has humanity progressed along evolutionary lines?
The Middle East war and other global fractures reveal that humanity is still caught in:
~ tribal identity structures
~ separation consciousness (dualistic or binary thought; either/or, “us or them” thinking
~ mythic literalism
~ zero-sum geopolitics
~ unintegrated trauma
In Homo spiralis terms, this is Stage 3-4: symbolic recursion has begun, but coherence is partial and fragile. Teilhard would say the noosphere is emerging, but not self-aware. The Homo spiralis model clarifies this as a threshold problem:
~ humanity has the tools (information, energy, symbolic recursion)
~ but lacks the integration, transparency and collective interior drive to cross into planetary coherence
As for evolution, the globe is inching closer to unity in potential, but is farther in actual practice, partly owing to the world’s dwindling empires (Russia, Israel, the USA) currently flexing their muscles and rattling their sabers, vain self-reminders that they’re still the superpowers of old, when in reality they’re in free-fall decline. Meaning, the spiral is still turning in a progressive direction, but the lower or shadow-side coils still dominate in the direction of entropy. In that sense, lower or shadow-side (ego-driven) autocracies and world super-powers are on the downward arc of the phi double-spiral, and the dark side of history. These autocracies walk a destructive path driven by disintegrative forces in the face of evolutionary progress, operating contrary to the will of the governed and the God-of-the-Whole (see Resource box at top for video short commentary on tribal warfare, disintegrative forces, and zero-sum politics re: the invasion of Iran).
By contrast, along cosmogenic evolutionary lines, a subset of humanity is always on the leading edge of the forward looking (progressive) evolutionary spiral, meaning those aligned with the next highest level of awareness toward a higher-order purpose. In the religious tradition of Teilhard, this subset is known as a “remnant.” In the process theology of the same tradition, this is called the “Paschal Mystery,” a death-resurrection choreography, which, when calamity subsides and the dust settles, results in higher-order life, often misunderstood as exclusionary. Though in Teilhardian and Homo spiralis terms, its outworking is deep, structural, and evolutionary, manifest in personal, corporate, and global evolution.
As for the remnant, whenever Source (God-of-the-Whole) gives expression to a spiritual truth, or introduces a divine idea, expression of beauty, harmony, or service via those imbued with spiritual consciousness (via a book, play, movie, teaching, etc.), that message has within itself the power of fulfillment. That same Source prepares a remnant of those responsive to that message in whatever form(s) the message takes, according to their level of spiritual receptivity (vibrational frequency).
Historically, the superpowers of the Earth have operated on low, survival mode (“us” vs “them”) frequencies, rendering them woefully remiss in their responsibilities to the well-being of the whole — reckless diplomatically, economically, militarily, and environmentally. Chief among them are the current political leaders misguiding the U.S., Russia, and Israel in world affairs. Subsequently, Earth may be teetering on the brink of its sixth Great Extinction event triggered by climate change and/or a nuclear war purge of apocalyptic proportions, terrifying prospects beyond imagination.
The reason is because coherence requires:
~ resonance
~ integration
~ transparency
~ light bearing capacity
By far, not all humans are at or near that threshold, nor are they ready to spiral upward. So the subset or remnant is not a chosen few, they’re the first wave of coherence in a given stage. By illustration, the oldest child in a family with five children whose ages are separated by span of twenty years are at different levels of development and maturity. The less mature are not stunted, evil, wrong, or arrested in their growth, nor are they judged that way. Rather, that’s how they typically behave, talk and think, either more childish or adult, in an age-appropriate way. Likewise in cosmogenic evolution. In the biblical tradition, those who stand in readiness to advance and transcend on the growth spiral are called the “spiritually few,” “elect,” or “chosen,” those considered the sovereignly attuned survivors of judgment. (Judgment here defined as “caught up in entropy forces unawares,” self-destructing by their own primitive, unenlightened, and untransformed biopsychic energies and ways).
As to the evolving remnant, Teilhard would prefer to call them “noospheric pioneers.” In the Homo spiralis model they are the light integrated beings and workers, threshold crossers who are spiral-aware humans guided by the more advanced in personal integration, helping the less advanced along the way yet to attain unitive consciousness. In this view the remnant is not about exclusion or elitism, but about readiness, a meme on the threshold advancing toward the next evolutionary coil in personal and/or collective evolution.
Hence, the biblical timeline, Teilhard’s model, and the Homo spiralis Homo framework mirror each other as follows:
1. The biblical arc moves from: Creation —>Fall —>Covenant —>Redemption —> New Creation.
2. Teilhard reframes this as: Cosmogenesis->Biogenesis->Noogenesis->Christogenesis->Omega
3. Homo spiralis refines and complexifies it further: Light—>Plasma —>Matter—>Life—>Mind—>Symbol—>Light—>Phi-Spiral—>Omega
Teilhard saw spiritualized consciousness (the Cosmic Christ) as the center of convergence, not just religiously, but cosmically as evolutionary science, in a manner consistent with the higher laws of physics (his visionary ultra physics), today known as quantum physics which centrally informs a more complete spirit-science model via qualia, not quanta. From that model evolves:
~ quantum theology
~ consciousness as fundamental (foundational)
~ a more nuanced christogenesis via Homo spiralis
~ a New Science of Humanity
~ and a New Universe Story, in that order.
The Homo spiralis model sees Omega as the scientific-symbolic fulfillment of that convergence, explained in Parts 7 & 8.
Eventually, this is how the world will evolve toward Omega, the God-of-the-Whole and unitive consciousness. And as Teilhard envisioned, will conspire to define when, how, and in whom the “age of nations,” ethnicities, warring tribes, and competing religions will pass along more global, unitive evolutionary lines. While evolution is inching noognenesis and global awareness ever closer to unitive consciousness, save for a remnant it is still quite far from attaining same, judging by the Mideast war and the dominance of less evolved superpowers hell-bent bent on warfare as a means of resolving conflict. It is important to clarify that for Teilhard, the noosphere is the leading edge of coherence and cosmogenic evolution, which does not include the whole species because:
~ evolution is not democratic
~ unitive consciousness is not evenly distributed globally, but is soverignly influenced
~ spiritualization is an emergent property that unfolds unevenly
~ the ascent is usually driven by a minority
~ the Omega attractor acts via coherent thresholds selectively, in its own way, time, and choosing
This defines the dynamic of Teilhard’s vision, and the architecture of his model updated in Homo spiralis.
Chronology is key in developing perspective in a deep time model, particularly in noogenesis. Recall, Teilhard first wrote the line “the age of nations has passed” in 1947, in an essay later published in his book in almost 30 years later. The specific essay is The Formation of the Noosphere, the earliest known appearance of the line:
“The age of nations has passed. Now, unless we wish to perish, we must shake off our old prejudices and build he earth.”
This was written after WWII, when Teilhard was reflecting on the irreversible rise of planetary interdependence. Though written in 1947, the essay was not published until after his death in 1955, appearing in the English collection, The Future of Man (1964). This volume gathers several of Teilhard’s late essays, including The Formation of the Noosphere, where the famous line appears.
Why this line matters
This sentence is not a political, philosophical, or cultic slogan. It’s Teilhard’s diagnosis of a phase shift in evolution.
~ Nations = mid-level coherence structures
~ Noosphere = planetary convergence (global) of reflective consciousness
~ Omega = the attractor drawing humanity toward unity from the future.
The Homo spiralis (1.0 to 4.0) model interprets this as the moment when the ascending arc of the spiral becomes the dominant evolutionary driver.
Hence, the hallmark of the christogenic stage of Teilhard’s model involves the spiritualization of consciousness, in which the majority of global minds (noosphere) as a whole will participate. This distinction is crucial in understanding Teilhard’s understanding of the noosphere, and cosmic evolution beyond psychogenesis. That is why this series, and Part 9, are being written. In Christogenesis the noosphere consists only of those who have attained and are on the leading edge of an evolved coherence in unitive spiritualized consciousness, evidence that they’re on the ascending arc of the phi double-spiral in perception and thought.
The “noosphere” must be understood as Teilhard wrote and spoke of it in the technical sense along cosmic lines, not the popularized one of postmodern times. Teilhard’s noosphere is not “everyone with a mind, or modern mind.” Most people treat the noosphere as “the sum of all human thought.” Teilhard did not mean that. For him, the noosphere is:
~ the layer of convergent consciousness, spiritual awareness integrating with soul (psyche) and mind
~ the zone of reflective awareness
~ the field of minds capable of thinking in wholes, unitive consciousness, and unification
~ the portion of humanity participating in the ascent toward Omega.
In other words, the noosphere is not a census category, it is an evolutionary subset, not a bological phylum. Teilhard repeatedly stated that the noosphere is composed of “those centers of consciousness capable of reflection and convergence.” That already implies a selection; only those on the ascending arc. Look around at the world today; in how many persons, venues, synthesis organizations, and religious traditions does the spirit of these patterns and principles prevail in our time?
The noosphere functions more like a meta-phylum, or evolutionary super-lineage defined by interiority rather than morphology. Again, Teilhard is explicit that the noosphere is not the whole human species, is not all minds, not all thought, but the portion of humanity capable of reflective consciousness, convergence, and spiritualization. It is the evolutionary vanguard, (cutting edge) or subset of humans participating in the forward movement of cosmogenesis.
The noosphere is not a biological phylum defined by body plan, morphology, developmental architecture, genetic lineage. Teilhard’s noosphere is define by reflective interiority, capacity for unification, degree of consciousness, and participation in Omega. These are evolutionary criteria, not biological ones.
The noosphere is not a phylum like the Chordates or Arthropods, but something more radical. It’s a new evolutionary axis. A phylum belongs to the tangential axis, the noosphere belongs to the radial axis (radial energy), a lineage of spiritualized interiority, not anatomy; a phylum of spiritualized consciousness, not of transfigured bodies. In his time, Teilhard didn’t have the vocabulary for this, but the Homo spiralis model does. Under that spin-spiraling geometry, the noosphere becomes a coherence, a defined evolutionary lineage of interiorized consciousness — a psycho-cosmogenic phylum.
This is the first time Teilhard’s intuition gets a formal structure.
The christogenic stage narrows the field even further
Once evolution enters the christogenic phase, the stage where consciousness becomes spiritualized, unified, and luminous, the noosphere becomes even more selective. Teilhard’s logic is:
~ evolution = rise in complexity + interiority
~ interiority = capacity for unity
~ unity = spiritualization
~ spiritualization = participation in Omega
According to Teilhard the christogenic stage begins at the breakout/breakthrough moment when only those who actually experience Presence, coherence, unitive consciousness, and interiorized freedom can effectively participate in the forward movement of evolution. Everyone else is more wholly biologically and psychologically evolved in the ordinary sense of understanding evolution — some developing, some arrested or fixated in development, some comfortably ensconced in theoretical comfort zones bounded by psyche and intellect that views cosmogenesis from a distance, but are not spiritually awakened, evolutionarily informed light beings and workers imbued with the kind of unitive consciousness that betokens an authentic, noogenic coming of age.
These are not statements of elitism; they depict an order of magnitude from the academic and pedestrian that are manifest in a global remnant (minority) at any given time. Withal, it serves as a reminder to those whose personal experience, spiritual formation, or religious belief systems have yet to usher them into an experience of unitive or spiritual consciousness but keeps them bound and centered more wholly in psychogenesis (psychological mode), where binary thinking and discursive thought prevail. For sure, psychological integration is a stabilizing developmental precursor in personal growth and development past the biological stage, requisite to crossing the next thresholds in cosmogenic coherence, integration, and wholeness.
Only an experience of a higher nature, one that supersedes, enlightens, and interprets its archetypes to the psyche and intellect along the way, enables persons to see and think in wholes, thus placing them on the cutting-edge of cosmogenic evolution among a gathering noogenic remnant. Such is not a mental phenomenon, or intellectual endeavor in essence, but one of a transformed heart. The human mind (intellect) cannot be the Source of spiritual activity, only its avenue after a higher consciousness is reached and interprets itself to it. This spiritual consciousness is a stratum without boundary. Unlimited, it imparts its eternal wisdom with awarenesses beyond ordinary thought, memory, and neural repositiories of immediate knowledge. It emanates from an insulated place within the psyche, where the ceaseless activity of the outer world knows not of, and does not intrude.
Those reading this who have not experienced first-hand what is being described here, nor fully understand what is meant by the explanations given, particularly in Part 5, best consult a spiritual guide or director, as the resistances to accessing same — personal, religious, and cultural — are multiple and varied. These resistances go mostly unrecognized in the interior life, and the reason many who study cosmogenic evolution (Teilhard-style) remain in a reflective psychogenic (intellectual) mode of development uninformed by a coherent wisdom tradition and spirit-inspired perennial principles. Many today will disagree with this position, but their argument is with Teilhard, the mystics, and perennial wisdom traditions, not this writer. (The tail end of Part 5 identifies patterns and themes of spiritual awakening and development common to all major religious/spiritual traditions).
The Homo spiralis framework gives Teilhard’s intuition a spirit-science mechanism
~ coherence = measurable order in the human system
~ unitive consciousness = high integration of cosmic generative energy and information fields
~ spiritualization = ascent along the phi spiral (double spiral)
~ ascending arc = increasing coherence, interiority, and light
So in Homo spiralis terms, the noosphere = the population of humans who have crossed the coherence threshold and are rising along the upward spiral arc. This is not metaphorical, it’s structural. In his time, Teilhard possessed the spiritual consciousness that inspired his vision, and only lacked the advanced science and integrated geometric architecture to assemble a more complete unified model. He envisioned a future model that would fulfill his spirit-science vision by identifying the nature of the radial energy (as Source) that seamlessly connects the apparent contraries of inner and outer worlds, spirit and matter, religion and science, including a revised version the God-of-the-Whole that is more inclusive, compassionate, coherent, and forward-looking. The upgraded model presented in this series supplies that, a process theology presented as a living cosmic spiral, personal, planetary, auto-cosmological, and universal.
Lower and higher spiral occupants: (wheat vs tares, noogenics vs war mongers)
~ instigators of the Mideast war, Israel, the USA and those who favorably align with them remain in the lower coils, though the spiral is still turning, agonizingly inchmeal in its unfolding process
~ occupants of lower coils are life-diminishers, agents of darkness serving entropy and disintegration
~ occupants of rising coils are life-enhancers, light beings/workers serving higher-order renewal
~ the biblical “remnant” on the rising arc is riding a wave of coherence, not a final judgment
~ Homo spiralis Omega and Teilhard’s vision complete the biblical arc by structurally fulfilling it.
Phi-spiral (double-spiral) coexistence: Teilhard and Homo spiralis.
While Teilhard envisioned evolution as a convergent process, he never claimed it was uniform. He saw centers of consciousness rising toward Omega, concurrent with zones of resistance (entropy, fragmentation, ego, intellect, and lower order persistence). That is, he saw lower and higher spiral coils, fragmentation and integration, coherence and chaos, tares and wheat, coexisting in time but not in coherence. In the language of his religious tradition, the tares and wheat, darkness and light, convergence and divergence, new and old grow side by side, Let both grow together until the harvest (Matthew 13). This describes the temporal overlap of convergent and divergent forces built into the fabric of the universe at all scales — physical, mental/emotional, spiritual. Their cosmic countercurrents create a tensional integrity (tensegrity) that counterbalances opposing forces operative everywhere in the the universe at all scales, creating very s-l-o-w but noticeable evolutionary progress over deep time, innermost and outermost.
This means that as the higher arc of the spiral tightens, the lower arc destabilizes in inverse relationship. The more coherence emerges, the more incoherence resists. The remnant rises, not by escaping the lower coils, but by spiraling through the transforming tension of their opposites, in the same way male and female conjugate, sperm and egg fertilize, and birth pains/contractions collaborate in producing new life. This inverse relationship of contraries behaves similar to:
~ when light intensifies, shadows also deepen
~ when order increases, chaos reacts
~ when truth clarifies itself, falsehood typically spikes and flails
Again, Teilhard would interpret this as noospheric tension, or in Homo spiralis terms, spiral polarity, and a great sifting and sorting of those yielding to or resisting personal integration/wholemaking by maintaining their shadow or dark-side orientations.
Perhaps the Pleroma (“that which completes/fulfills”), and with it the consummation of the ages will at come at the point of maximum evolutionary friction in human history when the ascending and descending, progressive and entropic arcs of the phi double-spiral that reach critical mass. Maybe then a global tipping point on the dance between opposing forces (contraries) in a world of paradox will shift in cadence from snail-paced evolutionary, to exponential, setting off a chain reaction where all tensions, contraries, and conflicts finally become reconciled as one with Source — cooperative, self-sustaining, and growth-only in alignment and orchestration.

Biblical timeline: coexistence until separation
This pattern jives with the biblical timeline for history in Teilhard’s religious tradition, whereby a remnant (subset) is preserved through chaos (as with Noah, Israel, the early church), with judgment seen as separation not punishment, the differentiation of coherence. Teilhard reframes this as the Omega Point drawing the coherent forward, and entropy dissolving the incoherent. Homo spiralis shows this as recursive ascent for the enlightened remnant, disintegration for the remainder of unevolved humanity. In evolutionary language the remnant is the lineage that remains oriented toward the Source via Omega:
~ the continuity of the divine-human project
~ the first wave of the New Humanity
~ the first noospheric lineage oriented toward Omega
~ the evolutionary seed of the next stage
~ carrier of the New Story into the new creation
~ the bridge between what collapses and what emerges
Teilhard’s cosmogenic model, its Homo spiralis update, and the ancient scrolls describe the same structural phenomenon which is neither a moral category or elitist, but architectural. It’s where a small subset carries the coherence of the whole forward. This process is illustrated in a parable told by the Cosmic Christ, where wheat and tares (cockle) grow side by side, but spiral in opposite directions. Again the dual spiritual principles: spirituality is all about seeing and reconciling paradoxes. Recall the visual metaphor in Homo spiralis, with a dual-spiral overlay (Parts 7 & 8). One spiral ascending as luminous, recursive, coherent; the other spiral descending as chaotic, fragmenting, and reactive. They share the same axis, humanity’s timeline where one converges and the other diverges in direction and destiny. The harvest is not a moment of wrath, its a moment of structural sorting in the Pleroma (completeness). What the Cosmic Christ called the harvest of the age, Teilhard called Christ Omega, and what the updated model nuances as Homo spiralis Omega.
All three overlap, pointing to the same truth: Coherence reveals itself through times of contrast, and spasms of conflict, and chaos. Seen in the diagram below which images the variables mentioned along synthesis lines when/if the majority of the planet’s inhabitants attain noogenesis.

Summary
Integrating the above is precisely what Teilhard’s model implies once the status-quo religious, devotional, and scientifically imprecise language of his model is stripped away. It can then be read as intended, as a cosmogenic mechanism where the noosphere is understood not as universal, but an evolutionary vanguard comprised of a remnant on earth. Thus defined, the noosphere consists of a relatively small but significant number of those whose consciousness is already spiritualizing on the ascending arc of the spiral beyond psychogenesis. Yet at the present time, as paradox, the world and spiral continue to be characteristically dominated by more by the lower vibrational layers (qualities) of untransformed psychogenics — incoherence, self-interest, power, control, chaos, entropy, and war. Such is evidenced by the global superpowers of east and west driven by rapacious desires for regional and global hegemony. Those powers have wealthy and powerful tribal supporters with little interest in diplomacy-first policies, peace, or coherence, but in propagating their dark-side valences in the age-old cosmic dance between the forces of light and darkness, renewal and entropy yet to resolve and consummate.
Conceptual Map
Drawing directly from Teilhard’s own inherited religious framework and the reinterpretive lens he applies, and that Homo spiralis updates, the cosmogenic timeline for history plays out as follows:
~ Cosmic Christ is the divine trans-religious, trans-historical spirit-science principle of cosmic order; the radiant energy and uncreated light (Spirit) immersed in matter at all scales unlimited by space, time, and culture. Free of all cultural names and bare of all religious forms, it is the eternal presence in whom all things consist and cohere whose dynamisms formed the shape of the universe 14 billion years ago.
~ Omega is the interior point of divine convergence in humans, and final point of unification toward which evolution is drawn; the ultimate pole of attraction and goal, the point of maximal consciousness, unity, and personalization. It is the Alpha and Omega, beginning and end, first and last act of the Cosmic Christ who perfects a remnant and consummates history in a celestial harvest or ingathering.
~ Pleroma is the undivided fullness and balanced state of all things aligned with Source before their fracture, fragmentation, and division into unreconciled opposites; the evolutionary spirit-science polestar/attractor reconciling universal tensions and paradoxes via advaned panpsychic mechanics, a syntheis mystery yet to be realized and fully understood. Alpha and Omega, first and last, beginning and end, there are no contraries or opposites in the Pleroma, an undivided whole.
~ Parousia is the consummating event, closing act, final manifestation and revelation as the God-of-the-Whole playing out in history, consummated in a cosmic ingathering (harvest) that separates the contrary forces of darkness and light in an unspecified moment in time, manifest in history.
Thus: The Cosmic Christ is the energy and organizing principle, Omega is the goal, the Pleroma is the completed state, and Parousia the consummating event in time (finale), wherein a chaotic and conflicted world will be shorn of its divisive ways and contrary energies. In Teilhard’s religious tradition, the world as it now is will be replaced in its entirety, transfigured into a higher order of being in the God-of-the-Whole.
All of which is to ponder whether such deep time cosmogenic perspectives, those in synch with the core of global religious traditions, perennial philosophies, mystics, wisdom literature, science, and interior transformation principles, provide enough comfort and hope for in these times of global chaos, angst, and war.
Save for a few, the memory and legacy of this Jesuit visionary remain relatively unknown to a fast-paced, war-ravaged world forever in the throes of chaos, conflict, and coherence, groping for a worldview of reality whose latter end is uncertain, and far from complete.
